The Programme

In an increasingly uncertain business environment, the task of managing has become more complex and demanding. The key to business survival in the future lies in developing leaders who can effectively respond to the rapidly unfolding challenges of tomorrow. The Executive MBA (EMBA), offered by the Suleman Dawood School of Business has been designed precisely to cater to this need.

The Executive MBA programme is designed for mid-career managers who have excelled in their functional areas and are to be prepared for leadership positions in their organisations. It is also useful for successful entrepreneurs who want to bring more structure and organisation to their enterprise. These individuals can leverage their rich work experience through a world-class management education programme in the form of the SDSB-LUMS Executive MBA.

The programme has been structured to enable busy managers to acquire management education while fulfilling regular professional responsibilities. It is spread over 22 months and involves a total of 4 weeks and 36 weekends of full-time academic activity supplemented by distance learning.

The EMBA programme is scheduled around the key themes of leadership and innovation. These themes are introduced in the first year, along with basic functional courses. In the second-year participants are offered specialisation courses, and a set of integrative courses that revolve around the theme “Planning for the Future”.


The Learning Cycle

The education process involves participants, faculty and business community as depicted in Figure 1. This is facilitated through assistance provided by the administrative and support staff.

The EMBA curriculum encourages participants to develop as individuals with outstanding managerial skills, expertise in decision-making and capacity for sustained hard work. It introduces modern theories and techniques relevant to the requirements of the business community in Pakistan. Peer group learning is encouraged through interactive discussion groups and in-class participation.

The business community plays an important role in the learning process by sharing its problems, issues and concerns with the faculty and participants. Many of these issues are subjects of cases discussed in class that introduce participants to real-life challenges in a modern business environment. Prominent business leaders are invited to share their experiences and views with the participants.

The faculty members design the curriculum and direct classroom discussions so as to highlight and analyse the main issues and problems of the cases at hand. Case writing, research projects and consultancy assignments also enable the faculty to develop a practical perspective regarding the dynamic nature of contemporary business issues to reinforce their academic knowledge. Faculty and the business community gain valuable insight into the real nature of the problems through discussion of the cases in the classroom. The business community benefits from this interaction as this process enhances the training of future business leaders capable of dealing with challenges and issues faced by businesses with a special focus on Pakistan.

SDSB-LUMS motivates its participants to meet the challenges of the business world and to assume leadership roles in business development in the South Asian Region. SDSB-LUMS education which is based on the synergy of participants, faculty and the business community, results in a learning experience unique in Pakistan.



The Learning Methodology

SDSB-LUMS provides a rich educational environment to its participants. The prime responsibility for learning rests with the participants. As part of the collective learning experience, participants are responsible not only for their own development, but also for the personal and professional growth of their peers.

The EMBA Programme is designed to enhance the analytical ability, decision-making and communication skills in the participants. This is facilitated through the extensive use of cases in the classroom.


The Case Method

A case is a description of a real business situation. By identifying the problems in a given situation, analysing preferred solutions, and devising implementation strategies, the participants learn skills that equip them for their role as managers.

The case method is particularly demanding of participants. When participants are presented with a case, they place themselves in the role of the decision-maker as they read through the situation and identify the problem they are faced with. The next step is to perform the necessary analysis, examine the causes, consider alternative courses of actions and come to a set of recommendations.

To get the most out of cases, participants read and reflect on the case, they meet in small study groups before the start of the class to "warm up" and discuss their findings with other classmates. In class, under the questioning and guidance of the instructor, participants probe underlying issues, compare different alternatives, and finally, suggest courses of action in light of the case objectives.

Individual Preparation

Individual preparation is the first step in the learning process and includes study from textbooks and other assigned reading materials, along with a rigorous analysis of the case. This crucial step in case preparation is the key responsibility of the participants. Each participant is expected to have read and prepared the case thoroughly before coming to the discussion group or the class.

Discussion Groups

Before the class session, collective learning and interaction in discussion groups augment individual preparation. Interaction with the members of the group enhances team spirit. These groups meet between sessions to prepare for the next class. In these meetings, each member contributes individual analysis and personal point of view for the issues in the case. Through sharing of diverse views and insights, the overall understanding of the case is enhanced, validity of arguments is determined, and new dimensions are added to the problems and prescribed solutions.

Discussion groups provide an important peer-based support mechanism to participants, especially in the early stage of the Programme. It helps the participants to develop intellectual and emotional support systems, which are crucial in a high-pressure environment at SDSB-LUMS. Discussion groups, however, should not be used as a substitute for individual preparation.

Participation requirements in discussion groups for various subjects are identified in the weekly schedule sheets. Participants must ensure punctuality, attendance and active participation.

Class Session

The individual and discussion group preparation of a case culminates in a collective classroom discussion under the guidance of an instructor. Contribution to classroom discussion is extremely important and constitutes a significant portion of the course grade. Effective class contribution requires active listening by a participant in the classroom. The case-study method enables participants to question conventional thinking, test ideas, and brainstorm solutions using real-life examples. Lively peer interaction is an integral part of the learning process, and the SDSB-LUMS classroom provides a rich climate for discussion. The dynamic exchange of knowledge and experience among successful individuals from different cultures and academic backgrounds encourages shared insights and enhances learning. Lectures, videos, and computer exercises complement the classroom experience.

To facilitate class discussions, participants must occupy the seats assigned to them and their nameplates must always be in place.

As a courtesy to your fellow participants and to preserve the discussion focus, please do not leave the class room during the session.


Distance Learning 

For the benefit of EMBA participants, IST centrally supports LMS – Learning Management System. This system allows each participant a dedicated academic resource centre on the web. Participants have interactive access to several course related activities and resources including course materials, assignments and discussion boards. This system can be accessed from anywhere and allows participants to access course materials and participate in course activities remotely. It can be accessed at http://lms.lums.edu.pk

EMBA programme also includes three Distance Learning Modules. Each module consists of two online courses offered in collaboration with Harvard Business School Press (HBSP). The purpose of these courses is to enhance essential knowledge and skills fundamental to good business education. Courses include:

  • Mathematics for Management
  • Management Communication
  • Quantitative Methods
  • Spreadsheet Modelling

Each online course contributes 1.5 credit hours towards the degree requirements. Each online course is linked with a regular on-campus course and completion of the online courses before the final examination of the linked courses is mandatory. In addition to passing all the online exams, the material covered in the online courses is also tested in the on-campus linked courses. Grades for the semester will not be released until the requirements for relevant online courses are met. Faculty for the linked on-campus course can impose a one-grade reduction penalty for not completing the online course in the allotted time.


Written Analysis of a Case (WAC)

Some of the courses in the programme use Written Analysis of a Case (WAC) as an assessment tool. The WAC must meet the requirements specified by the instructor.  Written Analysis of a Case (WAC) is usually an individual effort but an instructor may assign a group WAC. Content and style are both important in the assessment of a WAC. In addition to case analysis, participants should pay attention to elements of style such as grammar, spellings, structure and presentation of the report.

A late WAC is not accepted.



Curriculum Requirements

All courses offered, on campus as well as online, are mandatory.

To fulfil EMBA degree requirement, participants are required to complete 6 online courses, contributing 9 credit hours towards the degree requirements, 15 residence courses at LUMS, contributing 45 credit hours towards the degree requirements, satisfy EMBA project requirements contributing 6 credit hours and complete Globalisation and Cross-Cultural module contributing 3 credit hours. Each online course is 1.5 credit hours and all courses taken at LUMS are 3 credit hours each while EMBA project is 6 credit hours.

The programme requires basic knowledge of mathematics and statistics, proficiency in the use of computer, comprehension, reading and writing skills. Those who are weak in these prerequisites may be required to take preparatory courses.

No waivers are granted for courses previously completed at SDSB-LUMS or elsewhere.

Globalisation and Cross-Cultural Module

The Cross Cultural and Globalisation Module is an integral, seven to twelve days, component of the programme. It consists of sessions on globalisation and cross-cultural management with academics, experts and technocrats; and visit to local manufacturers, distributors and retailers. The module is currently being conducted in USA, with plans to hold it in China in the future. Travel, Visa, residential and entertainment costs will be borne by the participants. Participants who cannot undertake this module internationally, can make up the programme requirement through a seven to twelve days’ visit with intense management experience outside Lahore. This module like the International Module has to be followed up with a required individual report and be undertaken with prior intimation and approval of the Programme Director.

EMBA Programme Project

The EMBA Programme Project is like a real counselling assignment undertaken for a participant’s organisation. The Project will entail doing strategic review of the organisation/ environment, identifying various managerial issues /problems and coming up with alternative solutions.

Programme and Instructor Evaluation

On completion of a course, each participant is asked to fill out a course and instructor evaluation form. The forms should be filled out with great care as they help determine the quality of courses offered and the Programme as a whole.

Minimum Eligibility Criteria for Fall 2018 Admissions

Applicants must meet the minimum eligibility criteria in order to be considered for admission to the Graduate Programme. Meeting this criteria does not guarantee admission to the Graduate program.

Applicants are selected for admission to LUMS EMBA programme based on the following factors:

  1. Academic Background
  2. Performance in the Admission Test
  3. Work Experience
  4. Two Recommendation letters
  5. Interview 

Academic Requirements for Fall 2018 Admissions

Applicants will be assessed on the following criteria.

  • Successful completion of sixteen years of education leading to a Masters or Bachelor's* degree from a university recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan.

* Candidates holding only a bachelor's degree of less than four years’ duration will be required to produce an equivalence certificate of 16 years of education issued by the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan.

Decisions on admission are made after careful evaluation of all applications. Evaluation for interview call is carried out based on a combination of factors such as academic track record, performance in GMAT/ GRE (General), and work experience.


Admission Test Requirement for Fall 2018 Admissions

Applicants are required to take Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE) in order to be considered for admission. Only GMAT/GRE (General) scores are valid and, hence, applicants with previous LMAT scores need to take the GMAT/GRE (General).

GMAT/GRE (General) is offered as a computer adaptive test worldwide. Apart from official test scores that LUMS will require directly from Pearson and Educational Testing Service (ETS), USA, and applicants must submit or mail a copy of the unofficial GMAT/GRE (General) scores as soon as they take the test. The LUMS code for receiving GMAT/GRE (General) scores from Pearson and ETS is 0679. For further details on GMAT, please log on to www.mba.com and for GRE please log on to www.ets.org. The deadline to take GMAT/GRE (General) is May 16, 2018.


  • GMAT/GRE taken more than five years before the admission deadline will not be considered valid.
  • If applicant has taken more than one test, the best score will be considered for application evaluation.
  • Availability of valid GMAT/GRE (General) score will be mandatory for submission of online admission application.
  • Applicants who are admitted to, and join, the EMBA program will get a refund of one GMAT/GRE registration fee. 

Supporting Documents Requirement for Fall 2018 Admissions

Applicants must complete and submit their online application form on or before May 21, 2018; 5:00 pm (PST). The application form can be accessed online at http://admissions.lums.edu.pk. In addition, all applicants are required to submit all supporting documents to the LUMS Admissions Office on or before May 22, 2018.

Payment Procedure

International applicants are required to make a payment for the Application Processing Fee through a Bank Draft drawn in favour of Lahore University of Management Sciences. For further details regarding Fee payment options  Click here

Proof of Payment

Applicants are required to send original Bank Draft along with all other required documents as ONE package on or before the stipulated deadline. Applicants must print and paste the “Mailing label” on the envelope containing their supporting documents before sending it to the LUMS Admissions Office.

Interview Performance

A merit ranking for interview short listing is established on academic performance, work experience and GMAT/GRE (General) scores of the candidates. Only short-listed candidates are called for interviews.

Work Experience

The applicants for the Executive MBA Programme must have prior work experience. This experience demonstrates the candidate’s managerial track record and potential for success in senior positions. Evaluation is based on the quantity and quality of the full-time work experience. The candidates must have at least six (6) years of full time work experience, with (4) four years at a managerial level.



A Foreign national who is not of Pakistani origin and does not have a Pakistani passport/NICOP/CNIC is eligible to apply to LUMS under its International Student Programme. Applicants holding dual nationality out of which one is Pakistani are not eligible to apply through LUMS International Student Programme.

In order to study at LUMS, foreign nationals must obtain a “Study Visa” from the Pakistani Embassy/Consulate working in their country. The Pakistani Embassy/Consulate will only issue a study visa for students’ stay at LUMS upon receipt of Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan’s “No Objection Certificate” and Clearance from the Ministry of Interior, Pakistan.

For the issuance of Visa, students must submit the following documents to the LUMS Admissions Office through postal mail/ courier service by the stipulated deadline. These documents are mandatory for the processing of visa application:

I.Signed copy of Admission Offer Letter

II.Payment of Tuition/Hostel dues through a bank Draft (if any)

III.Completely filled “Student’s Information Sheet” for the issuance of NOC from the Higher Education Commission (HEC), Pakistan. 

a.       Note: No Objection Certificate (NOC) is issued by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan; which is a mandatory requirement for LUMS enrollment and Visa processing.

IV.Three (3) copies of completely filled and duly signed “Visa Form” (all pages) to get necessary visa clearance from the Ministry of Interior, Pakistan.

a.       Note: Please carefully read instructions given in the Visa application form and send it to LUMS through courier service by the due deadline. Form is available on the Ministry of Interior’s website (www.interior.gov.pk ). The form must be duly filled in with contacts/addresses of the applicant both in Home country and Pakistan.

V.Six (6) Original Photographs.

VI.Complete copy of Passport.

VII.Any other document required by the MOI for the issuance of Visa.

VIII.Academic Records-Certified Photocopies of:

IX.Secondary School (O levels/ 10th Grade or any Equivalent Degree).

X.Post Secondary (A Levels/ IB/ American High School or any equivalent degree).

XI.All academic transcripts/certificates (Secondary, Post Secondary, Bachelors, Masters or any other qualification).

XII.Copy of certificate of provisional grade point average.

It will give you the strategic management skills to take on new responsibilities at work, while continuing to contribute in the workplace during your studies, applying new theories and approaches, and doing projects on your business.

The Executive MBA programme is designed for people who have already taken the first steps in their career. We therefore do not offer specific "majors" since these concentrations are generally viewed as a way for business students to prepare themselves for entry-level positions. Instead our focus is to offer courses to those already in management positions, in order to enable them to progress to higher managerial and leadership ranks. Our training is therefore geared more toward the understanding of broad management and leadership skills.

  • Application for admission to the EMBA programme is an online process (there is no paper application for you to fill out or mail).
  • After creating an account and accessing the online application, you may then begin to complete your application.
  • You can work on your application at any time and submit it when you are ready. Please note that we expect applicants to adhere to the deadlines stated on the website.
  • You can "track" the receipt of supporting documents submitted.

Yes, admission test is required. Students have to take Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) or Graduate Record Examination (GRE). 

There is no minimum required score. The short listing of candidates is dependent on their academic record, test scores and interview performance.

The Graduate Management Admissions Test (GMAT)Graduate Record Examination (GRE)  is offered year round as a computer adaptive test. You should register for the test at least one month before you plan to take it. You need to complete the GMAT/ GRE test before you submit the online application. You may submit your application with unofficial score report however, you will need to submit an official GMAT score report to our office before you can matriculate. There is no minimum score requirement. A high score does not guarantee anyone's acceptance, nor does a low score preclude it as there is no minimum score required. GMAT/GRE scores are valid for five years. GMAT/GRE taken five years before the admission deadline will not be considered valid.

GMAT/GRE score is compulsory for submission of online application. You must submit/mail the copy of unofficial GMAT/GRE score report as soon as you take the test. However, the official GMAT/GRE scores can be submitted later.

Transfer of credits from another programme to the LUMS EMBA Programme is not allowed. All admitted students regardless of having an advanced degree will begin the programme as a first year student.

The Executive MBA participants are about six years more experienced, on average, than the traditional MBAs. In addition, the Executive MBA Programme has been designed to offer the skills required for those about to enter the senior management ranks of their organizations, rather than in-depth study in a specific functional area.

Accommodation facilities are available for all participants. 

We strongly discourage missing any course; however, we do understand that this situation might arise during Executive MBA. We may accommodate a participant in this regard but cannot guarantee that the individual will graduate on time.

No, there are no age restrictions for admission to the EMBA Programme.

A merit ranking for interview short listing is established on academic performance, work experience and admission test score of the candidates. Those who qualify this comparative ranking are called in for an interview.

During the interview, the Admissions Committee tries to assess the applicant's communication skills, managerial potential, thinking ability, subject knowledge and level of awareness of general issues. Final decision regarding admission will be taken after the interview

Admission decision will only be communicated through courier service; however, you can also check your application status through your online account. Regretfully, we are unable to provide information regarding your application status by telephone or e-mail.

The admission process is a well deliberated and thorough process. Each year we receive a large number of outstanding applications. Unfortunately, all of them do not qualify because of the limited number of available seats. The decision regarding admission is final.

If your application is unsuccessful you will also receive a letter informing you of this. Due to the volume of applications the University receives; it is not possible to provide feedback on unsuccessful applications.
